A string resource provides text strings for your application with optional text styling and formatting. There are three types of resources that can provide your application with strings:

String

XML resource that provides a single string.

Syntax:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<resources>
    <string name="string_name">text_string</string>
</resources>

And to use this string in layout:

<TextView
    android:layout_width="fill_parent"
    android:layout_height="wrap_content"
    android:text="@string/string_name" />

String Array

XML resource that provides an array of strings.

Syntax:

    <resources>
<string-array name="planets_array">
    <item>Mercury</item>
    <item>Venus</item>
    <item>Earth</item>
    <item>Mars</item>
</string-array>

Usage

Resources res = getResources();
String[] planets = res.getStringArray(R.array.planets_array);

Quantity Strings (Plurals)

XML resource that carries different strings for pluralization.

Syntax:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<resources>
    <plurals
        name="plural_name">
        <item
            quantity=["zero" | "one" | "two" | "few" | "many" | "other"]
            >text_string</item>
    </plurals>
</resources>

Usage:

int count = getNumberOfsongsAvailable();
Resources res = getResources();
String songsFound = res.getQuantityString(R.plurals.plural_name, count, count);
